PC Races

Alright, the first step to creating your character is selecting the race you’d like to be – most of this stuff comes directly from the 4th Ed. Player’s Handbook (PHB). I think a couple of people in our group will have a copy, and I can certainly lend mine out while we start. If we find that we start enjoying it, it may be wise to invest in your own copy. Here we go.

Dwarf:

In the dawning days of the world, great dwarf kingdoms spread across the world, now seen only in ancient ruins that dot the landscape. Though their numbers decline and the glory days of their civilization seem far behind, the dwarves remain stanch defenders of their world even as more and more of them disappear into the caverns below. Many individuals strive for the rebirth of their civilization, but not through strength of arms as in the past. Today, dwarven strength lies in skilled dwarven hands and trade – armour and weapons, wooden goods, gold – all have been touched by skilled hands, and all are valuable to the outside world.

Dwarves average about 4 1/2 feet in height, but are very stout and broad, weighing nearly as much as a human. They have the same range of skin colour that humans do, though red-hair is more common among them. Male dwarves take pride in their beards, while dwarven woman braid their hair to denote clan and ancestry.

Racial Traits:

Average Height: 4’3” – 4’9”
Average Weight: 160-220 lb.

Ability Scores: +2 Con, +2 Wis
Size: Medium
Speed: 5
Vision: Low-light

Other Bonuses: As recorded in the PHB on Dwarves on p. 36.

High Elf:

High elves are responsible for many of the ancient kingdoms and old magic of the land. Many have withdrawn from the modern world, becoming reclusive in their dealings with humans and the other races, preferring to live amongst their elven kin in secret cities within the old forests of the land.

High elves are of human height, while slim. Their complexions tend towards the fair. They commonly have blond or light-brown hair, which is most typically worn long and loose – and they cannot grow facial hair. They have long, pointed ears, with their most common eye-colours being blue, gold, or violet. Outsiders see them as the most civilized and haughty of the elves.

Racial Traits:

Average Height: 5’4” – 5’10”
Average Weight: 130-170 lb.

Ability Scores: +2 Dex, +2 Int
Size: Medium
Speed: 6
Vision: Low-light

Other Bonuses: As recorded in the PHB under ‘Eladrin’ – replace all instances of the word ‘Eladrin’ with the word ‘Elven’. However, they do not have the racial power ‘Fey Step’ – instead replace this with ‘Elven Accuracy’ as on p. 40. Replace ‘Trance’ with the following version below:

Elven Trance: Rather than sleep, you enter a mediative state known as trance. You need to spend four hours in this state to gain the same benefits as 6 hours for another race. While in trance you are partially aware of your surroundings and may notice approaching enemies and other events (ie: allowed to make a spot/listen check, but at a reduced penalty).

Wood Elf:

Wood elves are more tolerable of non-elven races, many living in small communities on the edge of human settlements. They are still rare, but are more likely to consort with humans than their isolationist cousins. They have bronzed skin and their eyes are normally brown, green, or hazel. Their hair is usually brown or black, but blond or coppery red is occasionally found.

Racial Traits:

Average Height: 5’3” – 5’9”
Average Weight: 135-180 lb.

Ability Scores: +2 Dex, +2 Wis
Size: Medium
Speed: 7
Vision: Low-light

Other Bonuses: As recorded in the PHB under ‘Elves’. Wood elves also share the trait ‘Elven Trance’ rather than ‘Trance’.

Half-Elf:

Rare though it may be, the love shared between a human and elf may sometimes bring about a child that shares both ancestries. They share both human and elven traits, and may live in either world – though hardship may follow them – they will live longer than their human companions, but their elven parents will mourn them. Most half-elves are sterile or have problems carrying a child to term because of their mixed ancestry – a child is considered the greatest of blessings to a half-elf parent.

Half-elves have the same range of complexions as humans and elves, and may share the rare (for a human) eye colour of their elven ancestor. Male half-elves can grow facial hair. Half-elven hairs are slightly longer and more sensitive than human ears, and are tapered like those of their elven parents.

Racial Traits:

Average Height: 5’5” – 6’2”
Average Weight: 130-190 lb.

Ability Scores: +2 Con, +2 Cha
Size: Medium
Speed: 6
Vision: Low-light

Other Bonuses: As recorded in the PHB on Half-elves on p. 42.

Halfling:

In every human city, there exists a sometimes invisible society of halflings – servants, thieves, and others. While many never leave their own communities in the hills, some halflings love adventure, and feel an itching in their toes to explore the world.

Halflings stand about 4 feet tall and are extremely light. They resemble small humans and are prop-portioned like human adults. Halfling skin tends towards the dusky side, though a range of many exists. Most halflings have dark hair and eyes.

Racial Traits:

Average Height: 3’10” – 4’2”
Average Weight: 75-85 lb.

Ability Scores: +2 Dex, +2 Cha
Size: Small
Speed: 6
Vision: Normal

Other Bonuses: As recorded in the PHB on Halflings on p. 44.

Human:

The dominant race of the world today. Many attribute the rise of the human nations to the friendships and knowledge of the elvens, but none can deny their fierce drive and accomplishments. Many different human communities exist – from monarchies, to democracies, to lands ruled by sinister tyrants and merchants.

Humans come in a wide variety of heights, weights, and colours.

Arkcanian humans (where the campaign is based) tend towards dusky skin-colours, with dark hair, prominent noses, and dark eyes.

Racial Traits:

Average Height: 5’6” – 6’2”
Average Weight: 135-220 lb.

Ability Scores: +2 to one ability of your choice
Size: Medium
Speed: 6
Vision: Normal

Other Bonuses: As recorded in the PHB on Humans on p. 46.

Tiefling:

Because they are descended from the bloodline of foul demons, those who know of a tiefling’s ancestry consider them to be evil and untrustworthy. Of course, not all are this way, but enough exist that the prejudice tends to cling. Some have a minor physical trait suggesting their heritage – pointed teeth, red eyes, small horns, the odour of brimstone surrounding them, cloven feet, or just an unnatural aura of wrongness. In others the connection may be more… obvious…

DM’s Note: Like other ‘half-breeds’, tieflings are rare. Playing someone with an infernal bloodline (only small physical traits, like those listed above) may be more believable than the illustrations in the PHB. It may make your life easier when dealing with the people of the nation as well – if you’re looking for a good RP opportunity, this may be a good one. I would still count these PCs as tieflings for the sake of game mechanics.

Racial Traits:

Average Height: 5’6” – 6’2”
Average Weight: 140-230 lb.

Ability Scores: +2 Int, +2 Cha
Size: Medium
Speed: 6
Vision: Low-light

Other Bonuses: As recorded in the PHB on Tieflings on p. 48.
